Summer and salad season may soon be over, but that doesn't mean you can't still indulge in your favourite leafy green goodness throughout the winter. Sure, soup, rice and pasta may give your stomach the warmth it needs during these cooler nights. But did you know that the right foods, even when served cold, can help boost your immunity, warm your soul and heal you from within? One such food is the very mighty anti-inflammatory turmeric, which packs a punch and is essential for anyone looking to keep healthy during winter.
We love turmeric soup, turmeric honey and turmeric oats. However, we wanted to try something a little different this week and show you how turmeric can turn your favourite summer foods into all-year delicacies. So sit back, relax and enjoy the mouthwatering goodness that is our turmeric salad dressing recipe.
Why should you eat turmeric daily?
Turmeric is one of those powerhouse foods that has been around since the dawn of time, but we are really only just cracking the surface on it. It has an abundance of anti-inflammatory and detoxifying benefits that can transform the way you look, feel and think (yes, really). Just some of the benefits of consuming turmeric include reducing symptoms of arthritis, reducing symptoms of depression, possibly fighting certain cancers, lowering your risk of heart and brain diseases, boosting your immunity and assisting digestion.
If you're looking for an all-around booster, we cannot express the power of turmeric enough. However, we know how tedious it can be to take it in capsule form. That's why we create recipes that allow you to incorporate turmeric into your life without feeling like it's becoming an overbearing habit.
Should you avoid turmeric with certain foods?
One of the beautiful things about turmeric is that it can usually be enjoyed with everything unless a professional has advised you otherwise. That's what makes this turmeric salad dressing recipe so good. You can throw it over all those leftover veggies in your fridge to create a flavourful fusion you won't soon forget.
While there are no 'real' foods you should be avoiding, for the best results, you should bear in mind what turmeric is trying to achieve. By this, we mean that turmeric is working to reduce inflammation, so enjoying it over inflammatory ingredients, such as tomatoes or chillis, could reduce its effectiveness. Try it instead over broccoli, spinach and carrots for maximised results. And remember, moderation is key, as is variety. Mix it up with a range of vegetables to ensure your body gets everything it needs to thrive.
Add Black Pepper for extra effectiveness.
Did you know turmeric is only somewhat effective until you add a secret ingredient? Black pepper!
This is because a compound in turmeric, curcumin, requires black pepper to activate. Without it, you won't enjoy even half of the nutritional benefits this powerful blend promises. Thankfully, our turmeric latte blend, used in this recipe, already contains black pepper! However, if you're using an alternative brand or turmeric powder straight from your spice rack, it's best to make sure you add it in.
